I used to think that digital was immaterial, that sending an email was an act of climate activism, while sending a physical letter was like climate hooliganism. It’s only in the last couple of years that I have come to realize that digital is an accelerator of many of our most climate-destructive habits.
I tweeted a not-dissimilar sentiment a day or so ago about scale, which is increasingly inseparable from how I think about technology. Growth and scale are everything in Silicon Valley, and anyone who tells you otherwise is likely in denial.
The cloud has mass, and digital tech has weight even though we can’t see the ones and zeros. Still, we can see the scale of the manifestations and impact of the technology needed to enable it — and the impact it can and is having on our planet.
We should be far more concerned than we appear to be.
